As soon as the fall winds begin to blow I crave comfort food; add an element of farm fresh apples and I’m in autumnal heaven. This Gluten Free Honey Mustard Apple Cheddar Sandwich is a new fall favorite for me. Fancier than your typical grilled cheese with lots of unexpected flavor thanks to the addition of smoked maple ham, earthy sage, and a homemade honey mustard drizzle. This yummy sandwich will leave your taste buds and tummy super satisfied.
Honey Mustard Dressing:
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sour cream
- 2 tablespoons dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons wildflower honey
- 2 teaspoons fresh squeezed lemon
- Place all ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk until combined. Set aside.
Sandwich Ingredients:
- 4 slices freshly baked gluten free (or regular) seed or sourdough bread
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- Homemade honey mustard dressing (see above)
- 4-8 slices smoked maple ham, thinly sliced
- 1 apple (Gala, Honey Crisp, Granny Smith work best), thinly sliced
- 4-8 slices sharp cheddar cheese, thinly sliced
- 8-10 fresh sage leaves
Sandwich Instructions:
- Butter one side of each slice of bread, lay butter-side down on cutting board.
- Drizzle honey mustard dressing on each slice, then a slice(s) of ham, slice(s) of apple, slice(s) of cheese.
- Place tops back on and press 2-3 sage leaves into buttered top.
- In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Place sandwiches on warmed butter and with a pot lid or other pan press down on sandwiches while cooking for 2 minutes.
- Flip sandwiches and cook on the other side for another 2-3 minutes, until cheese is melted and sandwiches are golden brown.
- Serve immediately.
- Note: Use leftover honey mustard dressing as a drizzle or dipping sauce.
