My work from home style is simple — smart casual and comfortable pieces that make me feel confident. I’ve worked from home for many years during the various stages of my career and I’ve found the following three wardrobe tricks keep me on task and super productive.
#1 Be Comfortable
Home is a place of ease and comfort so walking around your house in more formal work attire like a skirt or trouser with a blouse simply doesn’t feel right. Don’t make the mistake of going in the completely other direction either — a sweatshirt and leggings will keep you stuck in a malaise and never really ready to tackle the day. Choose something that makes you feel awake and ready for the day without too much structure. Soft fabrics, fitted sweaters, a familiar dress, or designer jeans are all great options. When you’re comfortable you are more at ease and when you’re more at ease your thoughts, ideas, and work product will flow better.
#2 Keep it Smart Casual
I love the interplay between personal and professional life when I’m working from home. The sound of the gentle rain on my window that I would never notice if I were in an office. The treat of having my kitchen just steps away to make another cup of tea or grab a bit of chocolate. The coziness of being able to grab the living room throw and wrap it around my lap or have classical music on in the background. All these things create space for less pretension and more authenticity. Additionally, dressing smart casual — for example, pairing a statement sweater with skinny cargos and chandelier earrings — brings a level of sophistication to your surroundings. As you are rooted in your unique expression you’ll invite deeper productivity and more original thinking.
#3 Imbue Confidence
When I work from home I surround myself with that which makes me feel confident — a button-down shirt, my favorite European pens, my Smythson agenda, Chanel lip gloss — whatever it may be. When you look good you feel good. When you have your favorite tools you can be a master artisan. When you are armed with all that makes you feel smart, beautiful, and grounded, you perform at a higher level.
