Back in the eighties my grandmother could be counted on for three things during this time of year: 1) listening to Bing Crosby & the Andrew Sisters Merry Christmas album day and night, 2) keeping her tree lights on, again day and night, and 3) putting a glass of homemade egg nog in your hand the minute you walked through her door. 

So in honor of my Mémère and her Christmas spirit, I’m sharing her traditional New England egg nog recipe. Made with just five ingredients, this flavorful concoction (mixed with a bit of Bing Crosby and perhaps your favorite adult liquor) will fill you with lots of merriment and good cheer from the first sip.

Ingredients:

• 1 large egg
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
• 12 oz. whole milk, cold

Instructions:

• In medium bowl add eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and milk.
• Using an electric mixer, combine for 15 seconds.
• Pour into chilled glass and sprinkle with more nutmeg.
• Enjoy immediately.
